DoorDash automation rules overview

DoorDash automation rules overview

DoorDash automation rules help you automatically adjust bids and budgets for Sponsored Products ads in Xnurta based on time or advertising performance, reducing repetitive manual work.

With DoorDash automation rules, you can:

  • Adjust placement and keyword bids under linked campaigns by day of week and hour of day

  • Allocate a campaign's daily budget by day of week and hour of day

  • Adjust base bids based on historical placement or keyword performance

  • Reuse a rule template across multiple campaigns

1. Supported Rule Types

Xnurta supports the following three automation rule types for DoorDash Sponsored Products.

1.1 Bid Dayparting

Bid Dayparting adjusts the current bids for placements and keywords under linked campaigns every hour based on the day, hour, and bid multipliers you configure.

  • Rule association level: Campaign

  • Effective objects: Eligible placements and keywords under linked campaigns

  • Object limitation: You cannot select a specific placement or keyword

  • Execution frequency: Starts at the top of every hour

1.2 Budget Dayparting

Budget Dayparting adjusts a campaign's daily budget every hour based on the schedule you configure.

  • Rule association level: Campaign

  • Effective object: Campaign

  • Execution frequency: Starts at the top of every hour

  • Budget limitation: Only daily budgets are adjusted. Campaigns with a lifetime budget only are skipped

1.3 Performance-Based Bid Adjustment

Performance-Based Bid Adjustment increases, decreases, or sets base bids according to performance within the selected reporting window.

  • Rule association level: Campaign, with drill-down to Ad Group

  • Effective objects: Placements or keywords you select

  • Execution frequency: Runs according to the daily, weekly, or monthly schedule you configure

2. Feature Availability

DoorDash automation rules are currently in limited rollout. If you cannot see DoorDash automation rules, contact your Customer Success Manager to confirm whether the feature is available to your account.

3. General Workflow

3.1 Create a Rule

On the Automation Rules page, click Create Rule, and then:

1. Select DoorDash.

2. Select the advertiser.

3. Select the rule type.

4. Enter the template name.

5. Select the execution time zone.

6. Complete the rule settings and save the rule.

The execution time zone is a template-level setting and applies to every campaign linked to the template. You can edit the execution time zone after campaigns are linked. The new time zone takes effect from the next rule execution.

3.2 Link Campaigns and Effective Objects

After saving the template, link the campaigns on which the rule should run.

  • Within the same platform and rule type, a campaign can be linked to only one rule template.

  • Budget Dayparting applies directly to campaigns.

  • Bid Dayparting is linked at the campaign level and applies to eligible placements and keywords under the campaign. You cannot select a specific placement or keyword.

  • For Performance-Based Bid Adjustment, you can drill down to an ad group and select specific placements or one or more keywords.

After linking is complete, the rule is applied to the selected objects by default.

3.3 Apply or Pause a Rule

On the Apply Rule page, you can apply or pause a rule for linked objects individually or in bulk.

Note: Apply Rule controls whether Xnurta runs the automation rule on a linked object. It does not change the campaign's delivery status in DoorDash.

3.4 Rule Capacity Limits

The number of campaigns that can be linked is counted separately for each rule type. When the current account reaches its capacity limit, you cannot link or apply that rule type to additional campaigns. Contact your Customer Success Manager if you need additional capacity.

4. How Automation Rules Execute

  • Bid Dayparting and Budget Dayparting run every hour.

  • Performance-Based Bid Adjustment runs according to the daily, weekly, or monthly schedule configured in the template.

  • After you edit a rule, the new settings take effect from the next execution cycle. Past time slots are not recalculated.

  • Rule results must comply with DoorDash platform limits. If a calculated value is outside the permitted range, Xnurta uses the nearest valid boundary value.

  • If an object is not eligible for execution, the system skips that object and continues processing other eligible objects.

Customer-visible automation execution logs are not available in this release. You can verify whether a rule has taken effect using the latest values in Xnurta, DoorDash Ads Manager, and changes in advertising performance.

5. DoorDash-Specific Rules and Limitations

5.1 Auto Bidding

When an ad group uses DoorDash Auto Bidding, Bid Dayparting and Performance-Based Bid Adjustment skip that ad group. They do not modify Auto Bidding settings such as minimum ROAS.

5.2 Daily and Lifetime Budgets

Budget Dayparting adjusts daily budgets only. If a campaign has only a lifetime budget at execution time, the system skips that campaign.

5.3 Placement and Keyword Bids

A DoorDash keyword-specific bid overrides the Search placement bid. Only Performance-Based Bid Adjustment lets you select specific placements or keywords. When configuring this rule type, review the selected objects and their final bids.

5.4 Changes Made on Other Platforms

While an automation rule is running, bid or budget changes made directly in DoorDash Ads Manager or on a third-party platform may be overwritten by Xnurta in a later execution cycle. Manage rule-controlled bids and budgets in Xnurta whenever possible.

6. Rule Compatibility

  • A campaign can use different rule types at the same time.

  • If Performance-Based Bid Adjustment and Bid Dayparting both match the same object in the same cycle, Performance-Based Bid Adjustment takes priority and Bid Dayparting is skipped for that cycle.

  • Budget Dayparting runs independently from both bid rule types.

  • Within the same rule type, a campaign cannot be linked to multiple templates.

7. Recommendations

  • Use Bid Dayparting when you need to control bids during specific time windows.

  • Use Budget Dayparting when you need to control budget pacing by time window.

  • Use Performance-Based Bid Adjustment when you need to adjust base bids continuously based on historical performance.

  • When enabling a rule for the first time, start with a small number of campaigns and observe at least one complete execution cycle before expanding the scope.

8. FAQ

Q: Why can't I see DoorDash automation rules?

A: This feature is currently in limited rollout. If you cannot see it, contact your Customer Success Manager to confirm whether it is available to your account.

Q: Why didn't a linked rule change placement or keyword bids?

A: Bid Dayparting checks eligible placements and keywords under the linked campaigns, while Performance-Based Bid Adjustment checks only the objects you selected. Possible reasons include: (1) the ad group uses Auto Bidding; (2) the placement is not enabled; (3) the keyword is no longer writable or returned by the platform; or (4) the object is not currently eligible for execution. Check the object's status and bidding method.

Q: Why didn't Budget Dayparting change the campaign budget?

A: Budget Dayparting adjusts daily budgets only. The system skips a campaign if it has only a lifetime budget or its daily budget is not currently writable.

Q: Why is the final bid or budget different from the value calculated by the rule?

A: DoorDash limits the range of writable bids and budgets. If a calculated value is outside the platform limits, Xnurta writes the nearest permitted boundary value.

Q: Can I link the same campaign to multiple rules?

A: You can link a campaign to different rule types, but within the same platform and rule type, the campaign can be linked to only one template.

Q: Does pausing rule application pause the DoorDash campaign?

A: No. Pausing rule application only stops Xnurta from running the rule on the linked object. It does not change the DoorDash campaign's delivery status.

Q: Where can I view automation execution logs?

A: Customer-visible execution logs are not available in this release. Verify execution results using the latest values in Xnurta, DoorDash Ads Manager, and advertising performance. Contact your Customer Success Manager if you need help investigating an issue.
